LIFE IN OFFSHORE
Offshore jobs are very much different compared to land based job. The working shift is 12 hours in a day with a rotation of 28 days on and 28 days off. The rotation is called a “hitch”. It’s differ from company to company as per their policy. Some of my friends are doing 56/28 rotation some 42/21. The catering personnel in the unit handle cleaning, washing and cooking on board. When your shift is over you can spend your time in gym, you can spend to watch movies in TV room or even you can spend by playing caroms or Foosball with your colleagues. In offshore drilling rigs specific offshore positions required to run an installation for 24 hours.
To apply for those specific positions one should have following skills and qualifications mentioned below –

Rig Manager / Drilling Superintendent (Resident)
The Rig Manager or Drilling Superintendent is the in change of particular drilling rig and it’s operation. He is responsible for safe and economic operation for the installation such a manner that meets or exceeds the client expectations. It’s an shore based position.
Rig Manager or Offshore Installation Manager (Offshore Rigs)
Rig Manager or O.I.M is the overall in charge of an offshore installation for which he assigned. O.I.M stays on board/site for a particular rotational period. Supervise and manage the rig to run safely and report to Drilling Superintendent about the operation. He is the overall responsible person for QHSE, Maintenance, Drilling Operations, Personnel (including sub-contractors) , Assets protection. He coordinates with on board client to understand and discuss about their planning and supervise all the offshore crew and drilling operation to make it complete with a safe manner.
Assistant Rig Manager / Toolpusher
A.R.M or Toolpusher supervise drilling crew and report to O.I.M or Rig Manager. He is the responsible to monitor the drilling operation and supervise all drilling hands to complete the operation with a safe manner. He acts for Rig Manager or O.I.M if required.
Driller is responsible for the drilling operation of the drill floor including draw works, mud circulating systems, rotary system and BOP equipment. Driller involves directly to the operation and supervise the drilling crew.He must have a good knowledge and enough experience in drilling operation. Driller must be present in the Driller’s Cabin at all times during drilling operations unless relieved by an authorized person. Driller’s directly report to A.R.M or T.P.
Assistant Driller often called A/D is the responsible person to lead and train the junior drilling crew. As an A/D he should have sound knowledge of drilling operation and good supervision power as he will directly supervise the drilling crew during operation and ensure everybody is working with a safe manner. A/D directly reports to Driller.
Derrick Man (Offshore Rig)
Derrick Man works under the supervision of the Driller or Assistant Driller. Handles tubular goods while working in the derrick. He is responsible for mud system and maintaining the mud pumps.
Operates and maintains drilling fluids system and pumping system.
The Roughneck/Floorman is involved directly in the drilling operation under the supervision of the assistant driller. To apply for this position candidate should have a good physical health condition with a fit mentality. They assist the drilling operation in rigging up and down, pulling/laying down pipes and casings with a safe manner.Handles tubular and drill tools using drill floor equipment.
The rig Chief Mechanic comes under maintenance crew section. He is responsible for all types of machinery equipment. responsible to carry out inspection, maintenance and field repair of all mechanical equipment on the rig.
Assistant Mechanic works under supervision of Rig Chief Mechanic. His responsibility is to assist Rig Chief Mechanic to carry out inspection, maintenance, repair of all types of mechanical equipment.
Motorman works under supervision of Assit Mech and Assist to carry out maintenance of mechanical equipment’s. He is responsible to check water and fuel tank soundings and report to Chief Mechanic. Additional he is the responsible to monitor tank soundings during fuel or water transferring from and to boat and to ensure there is no leakage on Hose.
The rig Chief Electrician also called “sparky” is the overall responsible for the electric system of an installation. His responsibility is to carry out inspection, maintenance and field repair of all electrical equipment on the rig.
Assistant Electrician works under supervision of Chief Electrician and assist him to carry out inspection, maintenance and field repair of all electrical equipment on the rig. He is responsible to monitor electrical equipment’s, batteries, and make daily report to Chief Electrician.
Barge Engineer (Offshore Rig)
Barge Engineer also called as Barge Captain is the overall in charge of deck and marine section of an installation. He is the responsible to operate jacking control, to monitor ballasting and supervise deck crew to work safely and efficiently.
Safety Officer often called as Safety Training Supervisor or Safety Training Coordinator look after for safety of crew, safe working practice as well as safety of the whole rig. He monitors the training schedule for on-board crews, provides on site training to the workers to gain their knowledge.
Radio Operator (Offshore Rig)
Radio Operator is responsible to carry out all rig communication between rigs to boat and chopper. He is the incarnate of rig Radio Room and monitors boat and chopper movement, monitor on personnel movement. Maintains an up-to-date POB report as personnel movements take place. Prepares and issues time sheets for payroll. Perform emergency response duties.
Crane Operator is the person who operates the crane for offloading and back loading cargo from and to boat. Works under the supervision of Barge Engineer and supervise Roustabouts to carny out the job safely. Responsible to carry out the maintenance of crane.
Roustabout / Painter
Roustabout or Painter is the entry level position to oil and gas installation. Basically they are unskilled worker.Carry out general house keeping on deck area, assist cargo offloading and back-loading operation. Crane Operator supervise them to maintain safe work practice.
On offshore installation Rig Medic is a must required to provide an immediate emergency first aid to any casualty. Rig Medic monitor all emergency life saving appliances and keep record of emergency drugs and their consumption. He checks the quality of food and water served on board by catering department. Directly involve to any medical evacuation situation.
Ware houseman (Storekeeper)
Ware-houseman called as Store keeper or Material coordinator is the in charge of a rig ware house. Monitors and keep record of all the material. Responsible to orders material and follow up with buyers. Monitor on material movement from to shore by boat or chopper and coordinate with shore based coordinator.
Welders works under supervision of Barge Engineer and carry out all welding and fabricating jobs on board. Assist Mechanic or Electrician if required.
